Course has improved tremendously in recent years. Could stand better bunker sand -- but that's improving, too.

Love to play Maple Run. Have a membership and can't wait for the weather to improve so I can play this spring.

Location is near Thurmont, a small town at the foot of Catoctin mountains, but the course itself is pretty flat, especially the back nine. However, lots of trees, some water, and some very primitive conditions, again on the back nine. Layout is not too challenging, but the greens are: most are on the small side, and relatively flat, but have roll-off margins all around. Several are very heavily contoured, and it is very difficult to get a chip to hold. Be prepared!! Fairways are generally wide and receptive and there are few bunkers. Back nine wanders through woods, and is not nearly as well-conditioned as the front. Also, my GPS had wrong distances on many occasions, probably due to outdated surveys, so be careful with your club selections.
Conditions were pretty good when we played, although the course did show some effects from the recent week of rains. Greens were pretty slow, fairway grass was not bad, and was being mowed as we played. Rough was also moderate, but there is also a bumper crop of dandelions. Staff was very cordial, but the pro shop and clubhouse are minimal.
Overall, Maple Run is a "neighborhood" type of course, perhaps best described by the 20 vehicles in the parking lot, 12 of which were pickups. Not a German import to be seen! Anyway, it's a welcoming place, and worth a look. After all, Bill Clinton came down from nearby Camp David and played it often, and seemed to like it!
